The fourth instalment of Smashed Vinyls Albums of the Year So Far... comes from the Mr. Smashed Vinyl aka Ewan Atkinson. After seeing The Kills at the Roundhouse earlier this year and rushing to grab the vinyl the morning it came out, I thought it was only right that my pick would be the new album from The Kills.
Ewan from Smashed Vinyl – ‘Ash & Ice’ by The Kills
It’d been five years but 2016 has brought with it a new album from The Kills. Since their last album Jamie Hince – guitarist and backing vocals – has married Kate Moss and had to relearn how to play guitar after a natsy accident injured his hand. Despite injury The Kills have come back better then ever with Ash & Ice delivering on all the hype built around the prospect of a new album. Synth heavy album opener Doing It To Death is the first taste of the new vintage from such an established source; it’s full bodied and has left me addicted. The sheer power of the song has already made it a live favourite, as anyone who has seen them this year will tell you.
Their new sound and power pulses through dancey track, Siberian Nights. It’s a song, which, much like the album as a whole, leaves you wanting to hear it over and over again. Although the electronic instruments have brought a new dimension to the music, it is still that classic sound we have come to love. Days of Why and How is a perfect example of this, it has that classic Kills vibe too it yet it sounds modern and fresh. The Kills have only improved on a formula that was already near perfect with Ash & Ice, producing one of the most exciting albums of the decade.
