Before FIDLARs headline set in Brixton last month the audience were treated to a very pleasant surprise. The support act, FREAK, were immense. They're loud, energetic and have a swagger on stage that you either have or you don't and FREAK's frontman Connar Ridd definitely has it. Their debut EP, What Happened? lives up to the all the hype their live performances build up.
The EP, just as when their on stage, bounces through your headphones putting that grin on your face only a band like FREAK can. The title track What Happened's powerful riffs and pounding drums are everything you'd expect from a young punk band. The clever lyrics and poetic nature at which they are delivered leave you listening to this track on repeat. The fun doesn't stop there, the next two tracks do not disappoint despite the chorus in Someone Help Me sounding suspiciously like Rihanna's SOS. Despite being reminded of Rihanna Someone Help Me is an angsty two-and-a-half minute punk cry for help during a break-up hangover; something we can all relate too. The way in which Connar spits the lyrics on the last track on the EP, Floating High, helps the EP to firmly mark FREAK as one of the most exciting punk bands in England. Every single track on the EP is a song you will end up listening to on repeat. FREAK have crashed onto the scene in style and here's to hoping that this is just the start of an epic climb to the top.
