Combining indierock, hip-hop and a bit of grit are essex band, STIKS, consisting of lads Sam Hooper and Curtis Driver.
This is a band that's pleasantly surprising with what they have to offer. Their first release, Massive Mix ironically only consists of 4 tracks, however it provides just enough flavour for you to want more. Plus, with bands and artists such as Wolf Alice, RATBOY and King Krule reviving the underground British indie rock music scene, there isn't a better time to get some recognition, the more the merrier! STIKS capture the bittersweet reality of being young within their comically relatable lyrics and electrically charged performance. The stand out track from Massive Mix has to be ALLOVE which appears, so familiar and nostalgic, yet still obtaining it's own originality.
How did STIKS form and when did you both realise that you wanted to make music?
SAM- Back in 2013 we started a lil indie rock group called The Takes which ended up splitting after 3 years of gigging and recording shitty tunes. So, me and our lead guitarist Curtis decided to split off and start recording tunes from my room. Our music tastes changed to hip hop and indie so it just sort of developed into a mixture of the two...
Who have been your main influences musically?
CURTIS - Production wise, Chemical brothers, Beastie Boys, but I've also listening to Kanye and Biggie when making some tracks SAM - Musically it ranges from Chance the Rapper all the way to Chas and Dave, but definitely the big few are Kendrick Lamar, Gorillaz and Kasabian. Always go back to them lot.
What do you think of the Essex music scene right now? Is it hard getting recognition?
CURTIS - When we were back in our old band the music scene was dead. We were playing gigs in Camden in well known venues on a Friday night to just 10 people and about 5 of them were family... it was just pointless. In Chelmsford there were 5 venues that would never pack out unless you had a huge local artist playing there and I'm pretty sure at least 2 of them have shut down. No ones willing to go and see small unsigned bands anymore, which is shit for us.
What do you hope to achieve out of making music?
CURTIS - Bare P and a Bugatti each...
Have you got any plans for what's next for STIKS?
SAM - Pushing the mixtape (Massive), making a bit of money, leaving the EU, collab with the Beatles... General music shit. Oh, and also potentially a new single out in September/ October but shh!
If you could tour with anyone, who would it be and why?
SAM - DJ Khaled for the bantz and inspirational quotes each night
