Welcome to the second instalment of Music Video Monday, the new series Smashed Vinyl looking at the weird and wonderful world of music videos. As the summer holidays are coming to an end this week we are taking a look at music videos set in schools. Music videos in schools often have inappropriate and sometimes bizarre sexual connotations as two out of three of the videos we're looking at certainly do.
What I Go To School For - Busted
What to say about this... Well it's clearly Busted's best song and video, the first scene is a classroom full of school kids watching a film of lizards and monkeys having sex - as we all remember doing so at school. The video jumps from the boys lusting over their 'hot' teacher to them rockin' out surrounded by their class mates in a cheesey but very loveable fashion. The Busted boys then precede to go round to their teachers house, climb a tree outside her window and watch her getting undressed, something James Bourne does look particular proud of. Apparently the fact she's thirty-three doesn't bother them which, for all parties involved is a good thing. Despite this video being incredibly creepy - Matt Willis even gets spanked by Miss. Mckenzie - it somehow how manages to feel surprisingly innocent. It's hard not to love this video, however strange it may seem.
Hit Me Baby One More Time - Britney Spears
When talking about music videos set in schools it would be impossible not to talk about Britney Spears' Hit Me Baby One More Time as it's probably the most famous video set in a school. With attractive women dressed up as scantily clad school girls this video was always going to be in the more iffy section of music videos. One of the things that makes the video being set in a school and filled with young women dressed in a uniform you would be sent home and given detention for wearing, is the fact that the song has nothing to do with schools whatsoever. Thankfully now, it would seem that all this would be seen as wildly inappropriate (we hope). None-the-less, it's an iconic video and arguably one of the best pop songs of the 90's.
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana / Smells Like Nirvana - Weird Al Yankovich
It's set inside a school gym and features anarchist cheerleaders, what's not to love? The video for the classic Nirvana track is one of the most recognisable videos out there, everyone must've seen it and if you're favourite thing about isn't the janitor then you're doing something wrong. However the janitor in Weird Al's parody version is even better. There was no way we could talk about this video without also talking about Weird Al's Smells Like Nirvana. From gargling marbles to kazoo riffs it's one of the best music videos you will ever watch.
