Billy Bragg, the legendary folk/punk singer from Essex, has teamed up with one of the best voices in country, American artist Joe Henry to record an album of field recordings from the great American railroad.
Shine A Light - Billy Bragg & Joe Henry
As a Billy Bragg record this is quite far from Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy and Talking To The Taxman About Poetry however, his last album the reflective Tooth and Nail was very much heading in this more traditional country direction.
It is a simply beautiful album, two men, with their guitars and unique voices travelling across America by train. It's the perfect soundtrack to the perfect American adventure.
Billy's much deeper and rougher vocals perfectly intwine with Joe's softer more eloquent lines resulting in some of the more charming songs you'll hear. The simplicity of the music is reflected in the simplicity of the recording. The album was recorded in various train stations across the great American railroad and even on board the Texas Eagle 421 service. It's the noises of the trains in the background and the unique acoustics in the background which help to make this a truly special album.
Although the album is definitely something that should be listened to from start to finish as one journey, highlights include The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore, Hobo's Lullaby and Early Morning Rain. The boys are currently touring this album across the states before they pop over the pond for a run of shows in the UK later this autumn. Shows which, are sure to be very special occasions.
