The seventh instalment of 'Hidden Gems and Forgotten Treasures' comes, once again, from Smashed Vinyl's omnipotent Jess Lynch. She has abseiled down through the deepest caverns of music's past and found a whole host of shiny treasures for you all to feast on this week.
Avant garde is probably the best way to describe the sounds of English-German singer Anika Henderson. An underground, experimental and ghostly vibe is produced within her solo work, which includes some intriguingly unique and quirky covers such as Yang Yang by Yoko Ono, I Go To Sleep by The Kinks and Masters Of War by Bob Dylan. Henderson is currently part of the band Exploded View, consisting also of Martin Thulin, Hugo Quezada and Amon Melgarejo. The self titled album truly is a work of art, experimenting with kraut-rock and post-punk, producing something entirely new and exciting.
A literary genius. Get out of breath after one flight of stairs? Try reciting spoken-word poetry for an hour straight with no breaks. Prepare to have your breath taken away (quite literally) by Kate Tempest. Combining poetry and music together to create a captivating and possessive performance. Watching Tempest perform live is an insane experience. Stories, poems and protests flow out of her one after another without pause or break for breath. She is so alive when performing, almost as if everything that is coming out of her mouth is completely live without any premeditation. Political, personal and provocative, Tempests work cannot be ignored.
Their album Cut has been referred to as one of the most influential albums of the post-punk era and it's not hard to see why. With it's catchy beat and playful tone, The Slits poke fun at just about everything from female stereotypes to drugs to Sid Vicious! Ari Up on vocals adds an animated and colourful twist to the mix especially in Ping Pong Affair and their cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine. A raw and uncontainable energy and spirit bounces through the album. Along with the likes of Siouxsie Sioux, Patti Smith and The Runaways, The Slits were one of the bands that pathed the road for the glorious Riot Grrrl movement.
