We caught up with Only Sun after the release of their new single ‘Long Distance’. For fans of Peace and Jaws, Only Sun are a brilliant new indie band that are sure to be making waves in 2017.
Tell us about yourselves and Only Sun. How did you decide on the band name?
Most of us have been making music together since we were early teens, and we’ve been through a number of band names. When it came to choosing “Only Sun”, we were sitting around a table munching on some cheese and crackers when we settled on the inspirational name “Yung Brie”. After three weeks and many interventions by our management at the time (our parents), we arrived at the name “Only Sun” after repeatedly being told: “I wish you were more like your brother”, despite the fact that none of us had any.
Who would you say has influenced and inspired you when working on the new single? As a band we listen to an extremely wide range of music. However, some artists we were listening to around the time of writing “Long Distance” that we feel influenced the track are Two Door Cinema Club, Django Django, Spring King and Kero Kero Bonito.
The video for the single is released on Friday, how was it working on that?
Luckily we were able to work on the video with our good friend Hugh Allen, who’s extremely talented, so the whole process was extremely fun from start to finish. He was able to capture our weird inner selves in HD and slow motion, and we’re really happy with it. However, filming a music video outdoors for two days in the middle of January wasn’t our greatest idea. We’re still soaking Ed’s amp in rice to try and dry it out.
Can you tell us about anything else you’ve got lined up for 2017?
We’ve got an exciting new EP called “Late To The Party” out on the 3rd of March, will hopefully be playing some festivals and exciting shows later in the year, and our next video may be giant dancing salad themed…
What is the weirdest thing about you?
Euan’s sixth toe.
As a band, what is your theme song?
Kero Kero Bonito – My Party
And finally, where can we expect to see Only Sun next? All around the UK hopefully as we’re organising a mini tour to support our EP release at the moment, and have dates as far north as Leeds and as far south as Portsmouth. This will end with a huge EP release show at Bloc Bar in Camden on March 3rd, which we cannot wait for!
