On July 24th 2006, Pure Records released the debut solo album by Scottish rock band Idlewild's frontman and lead singer, Roddy Woomble, 10 years on its first pressing on vinyl came through my letterbox.
My Secret is Silence is the debut solo album by Roddy Woomble, an album that reached great heights of critical acclaim when it was first released over a decade ago, now immortalised on beautiful black vinyl it sounds better than ever. Roddy's soulful voice makes for the perfect Scottish folk album, the mix of his vocals, traditional melodies and perfect instrumentation make for an album that warms even the coldest depths of a person. It feels like being wrapped in a blanked and handed a hot cup of tea after coming in from a storm.
My Secret is my Silence, released on Pure Records is an album full of stories about language and communication, about nature and the people that surround us and make our environment. Inspired as much by the poetry of Robert Frost and George MacKay Brown as by the time Roddy has spent up in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, which has long been the source for many Idlewild songs and albums.
“It's about the spaces between words, the language of silence, which is something you see a lot of in Scotland, particularly with the older people up in the highlands and islands. It's about what we don't say, what we leave on the table for other people to pick up. It's about understanding the context of your life, trying to make sense of that while you live it!"
This album is definitely in the category of 'it sounds better on vinyl', Pure Records have treated the world with this special anniversary pressing.
