Without any doubt, the streaming revolution has thoroughly shifted how the music industry works: labels have lost most of their power as gatekeepers, the role of A&R has changed and new doors to that so-seeked-after success have been opened for artists. This revolutionary transformation made it possible for acts to ‘make it’ without even being signed, and Swedish artist LÉON is a rather accurate example.
Her first single, ‘Tired Of Talking’, was released in 2015 and has already had over 46,000,000 plays on Spotify. This song was included in her first EP, ‘Treasure’, which again showcased great streaming success. Last month, LÉON shared with the world her second EP, ‘For You’, which performed as well as her previous material.
In this new piece of work she demonstrates, once again, the mastery of a fully fledged vocalist, whilst exhibiting the unique quality of her voice, adding up to her unique artistic signature. The lush, tasteful and delicately crafted production of the EP provides an ideal bed on which LÉON’s soaring vocals sit beautifully.
Lyrically, she approaches relatable themes like love and heartbreak in her own unconventional way, without biting her tongue. ‘You found someone, someone new, someone who could fuck you better’, she sings unapologetically in the song ‘For You’. With choruses made out of interlocked catchy hooks, you’ll soon find yourself humming back to the music. Beguiling melodies are a common denominator within the EP, which is in itself a breath of fresh air within the pop music scene.
