Emily Baker heads over the pond and picks out Parson James as one the US of A's best talents that us limey Brits should be aware of.
Discovering Parson James unexpectedly on a YouTube suggestion was one of the best surprises. The 25 year old singer songwriter is best known for his global hit in 2015 "Stole the Show" with Norwegian producer Kygo that launched him into popularity. After the realise of this song he's gone onto release his own music, the stunning debut EP 'The Temple' in February 2015, bearing his soul and deep lyrics about the difficulties he faced growing up.
Though the track 'Stole The Show' showcases his impressive vocals, it’s dance-heavy beats are a far cry from what you’ll hear on Parson’s debut EP, 'The Temple' featuring deeply emotional ballads and tracks such as 'Sinner Like You' to 'Slow Dance With The Devil' backed by stripped down instrumentals, the tracks have a moving quality that relates back to the church hymns he grew up singing in his hometown of Cheraw, South Carolina. Being gay, Parson did not feel welcome in the deeply conservative society, and moved to New York City at the age of 17 to pursue a career in music. Now, as he continues to address issues including identity, racism and guilt through his art, Parson is infusing the modern music scene with a deeply personal dose of soul." which makes him very empowering to his listeners by carrying a strong message. Keep an eye out for more to come from the brilliant Parson James.
