From the 18th – 20th May 2017 music types from all over will flock to Brighton for the 12th Great Escape Festival. Once described by Steve Lamacq as “the Cannes of the music world”, the festival showcasing over 450 artists at more than 30 venues across the city is a must for any new music lover. Tickets are available on the TGE website, or if you want to save a few quid and get involved, sign up to be a TGE volunteer (you normally get a Dr Martens sponsored t-shirt and lots of free Pop Chips… plus free gigs). As ever, The Alternative Escape is also happening around the city, you can find out more here.
With so many artists, it’s difficult to know where to start, so we've saved you some time and put together an A-Z of artists that you should go and see (in our humble opinion).
Check the Smashed Vinyl playlist here (and below) featuring must-see acts from the whole Smashed Vinyl team.
THE EAST WING – 7:15PM THURSDAY
“Music is a bit like a card trick,” says Darlia’s Nathan Day. “You can make flames shoot from your hands or pull doves from a hat, but it’s just a gimmick”. Forming whilst at school, Darlia have skill like no other for making sneering, mocking, melodic, grunge. Their first full album is due in 2017 (as they announced after Nathan released a satirical NME article suggesting the band had been ‘taking a break’).
For fans of: Sonic Youth, Wolf Alice, Drenge, Black Honey
DREAM WIFE WAGNER HALL – 11:00PM FRIDAY STICKY MIKE’S FROG BAR – 9:30PM SATURDAY
Smashed Vinyl favourite Dream Wife are getting a name for themselves as one of the best new live bands in London, recently touring with Sleigh Bells, The Kills and receiving high praise on their debut tour at SXSW.
For fans of: The Kills, Sleigh Bells, Peaches, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
FLAMINGODS THE HAUNT – 7:30PM THURSDAY KOMEDIA STUDIO – 2:15PM SATURDAY
Without a doubt one of my favourite musical finds of the past year, Flamingods describe themselves as ‘exotic psychedelia’, taking influence from cultures from around the world, using instruments from Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, Japan and Tanzania. The result: a completely magical sound.
As a fellow Chelmsfordian and previous guest on Smashed Vinyl’s radio show, there was no way Connar Ridd AKA FREAK could be missed off this list. It also helps that he’s really fucking good. There’s no way he’ll let you ignore the bold, high energy mark he’s making on the music scene.
For fans of: Slaves, Rat Boy (duh), Nirvana
THE HAUNT – 8:00PM THURSDAY THE HAUNT – 11:30PM FRIDAY
Signed to Moshi Moshi (alongside the likes of Florence and the Machine and Hot Chip), I challenge you not to be charmed by clever, lo-fi sounds of this North London girl power trio.
For fans of: The Pipettes, Veronica Falls, Whitney, Cate Le Bon
GOAT GIRL PAGANINI BALLROOM – 7:15PM THURSDAY
So they may not be solely responsible for “rebuilding the London indie scene” (did it ever need rebuilding?), but Goat Girl are undoubtedly one of the most talked-about bands emerging this year. Producing music with the cryptic sass of Iggy Pop and The Slits combined, these girls are cool as fuck.
For fans of: The Slits, Patti Smith, INHEAVEN, PJ Harvey
