Ahead of their headline show at the Demon Dayz Festival in Margate, the Gorillaz played a warm up show at the O2 Academy Brixton. With tickets at only fiver each it was a gig that everyone wanted to get into but there was a catch; you could get access to tickets if you had already bought tickets for Demon Dayz, it really was a proper warm up show.
It was a 2-hour set with no warm up act that really made you feel like you had been transported into the world of the Gorillaz. They performed nearly 30 songs including two new debuts, and 8 songs from Demon Dayz as well as some of their newer releases such as We Got the Power.
Damon Albarn led the show, bringing on a huge range of guests, everyone from Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, Happy Mondays front man Shaun Ryder (who came on to perform DARE), to Kano and De La Soul.
Backed by an talented band and a number of backing singers, Damon Albarn proved that he is a born front man, the confidence and ease he demonstrated throughout the gig was incredible, as he manage to keep control of the show, while simultaneously jumping into the audience, dancing around the stage, and singing the Gorillaz biggest hits with a smile bigger then the Chesire Cats.
Overall it was an seriously incredible show and if you ever get the chance to go see the Gorillaz (for example on their tour that’s happening later this year), then do it!
